A husband who renovated his old prison twice to run a cafe. Based on the experience I learned from looking over my shoulder, I decided to try renovating my own house this time. A place to live with two dogs and a soon-to-be baby. As a young couple, their budget was small, but they wanted a house with a large yard, so they came to Yeongjong Island. Although it was a 14-year old prison, my husband learned from the trial and error he had experienced and took on the challenge of running a direct construction project.
The theme of this house is ‘Kyoto.’ The couple, who had no experience traveling abroad, went to Japan for the first time after dating. The two people were excited about their first overseas trip and loved the quiet sensibility of Kyoto. We remodeled our current home to bring the happy memories from that time.
The biggest goal is to preserve the feel of wood as much as possible! My husband wanted a cabin feel, as if he were inside a log. Everything from the kitchen furniture and lighting, as well as the walls to the ceiling, is made of wood. At first glance, it all looks like expensive veneer, but my husband personally pasted film on the wall to enhance the feel. He designed all the wooden furniture himself.

In order to make the repair as perfect as possible even with a small budget, my husband used all the tools himself and served as the site manager and handyman. However, while saving money on repairing the house, they spent a whopping 50 million won on the interior design. It is said that my husband, who is highly discerning, chose not only expensive home appliances but also high-quality door handles. The second place I visited in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul was a three-story house located between dense buildings in the old city center. A couple who came to the old city center in search of their own land. The land chosen by the couple, who had a small budget, was a parking lot that could barely accommodate four cars. Although it may be a small and remote place for some, it was a land of opportunity for the couple. The couple had to save up for 8 years to be able to afford the construction costs, but the sky-rocketing cost of the property made it difficult for them to do anything last year.
As it is an irregular piece of land measuring approximately 82.6㎡, overcoming the limitations of the site was an urgent priority. Due to the nature of small houses, there is a limit to the floor space, so skylights were installed to secure a sense of vertical space. In addition, the height of the skylight and the floor were varied for each space, separating the spaces without walls.
Use the scrap space created in the shape of the ground as a pantry! In a living room like a sunken, from the floor to the sofa, stairs and backrest become chairs. A structure I couldn’t have imagined if I lived in an apartment. My husband, who wanted to make building fun, even built a hidden bathroom behind the bookshelf.
Although my husband worked in interior design, it was his first time building his own home. It was built with a lightweight steel frame that allows for easy modification of each outlet location and requires a short construction period. To reduce labor costs, my husband did most of the construction himself, starting with on-site supervision. I even quit the company I was working for and went to work at the construction site every day for six months.
