The true story of the crew aboard the ‘Memphis Belle’

England, May 1943, during World War II. The U.S. 8th Air Force base is stationed here. The B-17 bomber ‘Memphis Belle’ is about to embark on its 25th and final mission in history. The crew of the Memphis Belle, named after Captain Dennis Dearborn’s girlfriend, consists of four officers and six enlisted men, who return home after successfully completing their final mission. Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Derringer, a public relations officer for the U.S. military, is confident of success and invites a famous magazine to interview the officers and prepares a celebration party upon their return. However, Colonel Craig Harriman is not happy with the situation as the number of returning soldiers decreases every time. The soldiers expected an easy mission as it was their last, but an order was given to bomb a fighter jet factory in Bremen, Germany.

The Memphis Belle crew becomes tense and anxious as they witness their fellow fighter jets crashing during a breathtaking battle in the sky. While waiting for the clouds to clear over Bremen, the aircraft catches fire due to enemy attack, and one crew member loses consciousness from severe injuries. The mission is completed and the successful return to base is just around the corner, but the power supply is cut off and one landing gear does not work…

The final mission performed by the crew of ‘Memphis Belle’

This is a film about the final mission performed by the crew of the ‘Memphis Belle’, which actually existed among the US military’s B-17 bombers called ‘Fortress in the Sky’ that was active based in England during World War II. At the time, U.S. Air Force fighter crews had to complete 25 missions to return home. Even though hundreds of soldiers left on missions every day, the number of returning soldiers decreased, making Memphis Belle’s final mission a historic moment. Ten young men with different upbringings and personalities have different attitudes toward their missions, but show the appearance of heroic soldiers who bravely overcome any crisis.

You can get a glimpse into the daily lives of air force soldiers at the time. When going out on a sortie, carry a lucky charm with you and do not congratulate yourself in advance by recklessly guaranteeing a safe return. The British side provides consolation performances to boost the morale of soldiers. The thrilling aerial battle with Nazi bombers approaching at incredible speeds was well depicted. Memphis Belle actually completed 25 missions, but the characters and situations were created fictionally for the sake of the work. You can see the actual battle scene between Memphis Belle and her crew in a documentary called ‘Memphis Belle: The Story of the Sky Fortress’ that came out in 1944.
