Beijing: In China, the birth rate is declining and the number of people getting married is declining, according to official figures. According to the China Statistical Yearbook 2021, this will exacerbate the current population crisis in the world’s most populous country.

The number of marriage registrations in China has declined for seven consecutive years. Last year was the lowest rate in 17 years. In the first three quarters of 2021, a total of 5.87 million couples got married in the country. This is slightly less than the same period in 2020. Birth rates throughout the world have dropped dramatically already. The birth rate in the country was 0.852 per cent last year. For the first time since 1978, the birth rate has fallen below one percent.

As the demographic crisis intensified, the decades-old one-child policy was repealed in 2016, allowing up to two children. The law was amended this year to allow up to three children.

Factors such as the world’s largest market and the largest human resources contributed to the growth of the Chinese economy. The decline in population and the current social conditions are expected to affect the country’s economy. The government is making efforts to overcome the crisis.
