The Russian Federation did not offer Ukraine to buy Russian gas in exchange for continuing fuel transit. This was reported on Saturday, July 24, in the press service of the Russian energy company Gazprom. The commentary followed in connection with the statement of Yuriy Vitrenko, chairman of the board of Naftogaz Ukrainy.

“Please note that no one offered Ukraine to buy Russian gas,” the Gazprom press service said. They stressed that the words of the head of the board of “Gazprom” Alexei Miller were addressed to partners from the EU countries, “first of all – German.” It was, in particular, about the transit of gas through Ukraine after 2024 in accordance with the new volumes of purchases by EU companies – against the background of decarbonization in the European Union, Gazprom said.

Head of Naftogaz Ukrainy: Kiev will not pay extra to Moscow

The head of Naftogaz Ukrainy, Vitrenko, said earlier on the air on the Ukraina 24 TV channel that it is not expedient to continue transit when Ukraine still has to pay extra to Russia. “We do not need any agreements that lead to the fact that money from Ukraine goes to Russia,” he stressed.

Miller – on the conditions for increasing the volume of transit

Yuri Vitrenko’s statement followed a comment by Alexey Miller. He, in particular, noted that “Gazprom” is ready “even to increase the volume of transit through Ukraine” if the scale of new purchases of Russian gas along the Ukrainian route is in total higher than the current transit obligations. At the same time, Miller emphasized that the issues of new volumes of purchases “should be resolved on market conditions and at market prices.”

Germany-US Nord Stream 2 deal

Earlier, on July 21, it became known about an agreement between Germany and the United States to resolve the conflict over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. As part of the deal, Germany pledged to take action in the event of Kremlin attempts to use energy as a weapon against Ukraine, or Russian aggression against Kiev. These measures will, in particular, be aimed at limiting the export of Russian energy resources to Europe. The United States and Germany also pledged to use leverage to extend the 2024 agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, which expires in 2024, by 10 years.

In addition, Germany will provide Kiev with additional financial assistance in the amount of more than 200 million euros. About 70 million euros will be allocated for the implementation of bilateral projects in the energy sector. The US and Germany will also set up a fund of at least $ 1 billion. Its tasks will include investing in Ukraine’s transition to renewable energy sources and improving energy security. Finally, Berlin should focus its efforts on reaching an EU agreement on investments in the Ukrainian energy sector up to $ 1.77 billion by 2027.

Germany will comply with the terms of the EU’s Third Energy Package

At the same time, Germany guaranteed that it would fully comply with the parameters of the EU’s Third Energy Package in the situation with Nord Stream 2. “We support the energy security of Ukraine, Central and Eastern Europe, in particular, we support the key principles enshrined in the EU’s Third Energy Package. They relate to diversification and security of supplies,” a joint statement from Washington and Berlin said.
