When President Yoon Seok-yeol decided on the 2nd to invite floor leader Choo Kyung-ho and other party leaders, excluding People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon, the outside party leader, to the presidential office for a dinner, those close to him (pro-Han Dong-hoon) said, “There will inevitably be a misunderstanding that he is ostracizing Representative Han.” There was a backlash saying, “That’s it.” On the other hand, the President’s Office and the floor leadership’s position is, “It is just an annual event ahead of the National Assembly audit, which begins on the 7th.”
In a phone call on the 1st, an official from the pro-Korean community said, “We are having a dinner ahead of the National Assembly inspection, so it is not right to raise the issue of ‘Why are you not calling Representative Han or the party leadership?’” He added, “It is not right to meet only the floor leadership without answering the request for a private meeting.” “It could lead to misunderstandings,” he said. This revealed President Yoon’s dissatisfaction with the fact that he did not respond to Representative Han’s request for a second private meeting and instead had a dinner party with the relatively pro-Yoon (pro-Yoon Seok-yeol) floor leadership.
While President Yoon is planning to exercise his right to reconsider (veto) the ‘Special Prosecutor Kim Kun-hee Act’, the plenary session for a re-vote is expected to take place around the 4th or 5th, so there is some talk about whether it is for the purpose of ‘controlling votes’. A ruling party official said, “Aren’t they aiming to achieve the goal of rejecting the special prosecution bill rather than normalizing party-government relations?”
Regarding the dinner, the President’s Office said, “It is merely an opportunity to encourage the floor leadership, standing committee chairs, and secretaries ahead of the National Assembly inspection.” An official from the President’s Office emphasized in a phone call, “As the National Assembly inspection is a time for the opposition party to criticize and question the government, it was designed to encourage key members of the ruling party’s standing committee and floor leadership who will face difficulties and hardships on the front lines.” This official refuted, “It was not possible to invite Representative Han Dong-hoon to a position that did not fit his status, so the talk of ‘passing the party leader’ or cracking down on stray votes ahead of the re-vote is an overinterpretation.”
Senior floor spokesperson Shin Dong-wook also said on the same day, “It is not appropriate to look at it from the perspective of ‘Why was one representative missing?’ every time there is a dinner or meal.”
