The prosecution requested an arrest warrant again for ‘Geonjinbeopsa’ Jeon Seong-bae (64), who was arrested by the prosecution on charges of receiving illegal political funds during the 2018 Yeongcheon mayoral election in Gyeongsangbuk-do.
The Seoul Southern District Prosecutor’s Office’s Virtual Asset Crime Joint Investigation Team (Director Park Geon-wook) announced on the 7th that it had requested an arrest warrant again for Mr. Jeon, who is suspected of violating the Political Fund Act on the 6th. Mr. Jeon’s interrogation as a suspect prior to his arrest (substantial examination of warrant) will be held at 2 p.m. on the 9th at a hearing by the chief judge in charge of warrants at the Seoul Southern District Court.
During the 7th national local election in 2018, Mr. Jeon said to Mr. A, a preliminary candidate of the Liberty Korea Party (currently the People Power Party) who was running in the party’s primary for Yeongcheon mayor, that he would ‘ask Rep. Yoon Han-hong of the Liberty Korea Party to nominate him’ and received 100 million won. He is accused of receiving money.
The prosecution requested an arrest warrant for Mr. Jeon on the 18th of last month, but dismissed the arrest warrant the next day, the 19th, saying that the date and amount of money he received were not clearly confirmed. Afterwards, the prosecution reportedly supplemented the reasons for dismissing the arrest warrant through additional investigation.
Mr. Jeon was active in the camp of candidate Yoon Seok-yeol during the 2022 presidential election, and suspicions were raised that he was involved in their interests by showing off his close relationship with the president and his wife. It was also revealed that he worked with President Yoon’s wife Kim Kun-hee’s ‘Kobana Contents’ business card as an advisor.
