Regarding the continued revelations by Myung Tae-gyun, a key party involved in the suspicion of involvement in the nomination of First Lady Kim Kun-hee, the Democratic Party of Korea leadership said, “It seems as if the fate of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration is hanging on the tip of Myeong’s three-inch tongue.” Regarding the opinion poll conducted by the Future Korea Research Institute, which was effectively run by Mr. Myeong, he also raised the possibility of an ‘illegal opinion poll’, saying, “The quid pro quo must be revealed.”
Park Chan-dae, floor leader of the Democratic Party, said at a government audit meeting on the 10th, “It reminds me of the nightmare of the Park Geun-hye administration that was playing around with Choi Soon-sil,” and “If the suspicions surrounding Mr. Myung are true, it is a clear second party comparable to Choi Soon-sil’s manipulation of state affairs that led to the downfall of the Park Geun-hye administration.” He pointed out, “This is a situation of government interference.” In fact, it is interpreted as a suggestion that it could lead to grounds for impeachment. At the same time, he said, “The response from the President’s Office is unprecedentedly passive,” and “I wonder why they are leaving Mr. Myung, who makes blatant threats and defamation against President Yoon and Mrs. Kim, alone.”
Park Seong-joon, senior deputy floor leader, also said, “The key is to reveal the correlation that Mr. Myung conducted about 20 public opinion polls during the last presidential election and that former People Power Party lawmaker Kim Young-seon received nomination in return.” He continued, “Mr. Myung met very freely with Rep. Lee Jun-seok of the New Reform Party, former Emergency Response Committee Chairman Kim Jong-in of the People Power Party, President Yoon, and First Lady Kim,” and added, “I think that’s how powerful his influence was, and the fundamental reason was the public opinion poll.”
The Democratic Party believes that the remarks made by Kang, former lawmaker Kim’s accounting manager, who revealed that former People Power Party lawmaker Kim Young-sun received a nomination for the by-election in exchange for free public opinion polls related to President Yoon in 2022, are credible. Democratic Party floor spokesperson Noh Jong-myeon met with reporters after the meeting and said, regarding Mr. Kang’s appearance as a witness at the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee’s audit of state affairs on the 21st, “This person needs protection because he is a public interest informant,” and “There are those who are willing to (attend).” “We believe this is the case, but the situation is large so we will make a careful decision,” he said.
He urged the People Power Party to directly investigate the truth. Regarding the suspicion of leakage of the People Power Party member list, Cho Seung-rae, chief spokesperson of the Democratic Party, said at a briefing, “If it is true, is the People Power Party a political party that gives the list of party members to a mere political broker?” and “Whose work was the primary that created Yoon Seok-yeol as the presidential candidate at the time?” “It must be revealed,” he said.
