‘Extreme House Building, Challenging the Limit’ will air on EBS1 at 9:55 PM on July 30th.

The most difficult land ever, confronted with architectural design

In Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, an architect who faced a difficult land that others avoided with only one blueprint appeared! A white house standing alone without any other houses nearby. It is said to be located on a sweet potato-shaped hill, and the retaining wall behind the house is a whopping 14 meters! It is a strange house with no windows and only walls visible on a site where it is difficult to build a house, with a building coverage ratio of less than 20%. This house is said to have been built by an architect with 10 years of experience who turned the disadvantages of the land into advantages.

When we lived in an apartment, the three children and the couple did not have their own personal space. As the children grew up and the work at home increased, the husband needed more space. He searched for land every day and found the current site. It was a precious land with a park right in front of it, and a forest visible from the city center, located in a school district from elementary school to high school. However, as the advantages were clear, the disadvantages were also clear. However, for the architect, the difficult conditions of the land were a challenge that inspired a sense of challenge.

The first disadvantage of the land is the exposure of privacy! There are more than 500 students commuting to and from school because there are schools nearby. In addition, because it is on a slope, the inside is visible when looking down. So the idea was to build three 8-meter concrete walls. By extending the three walls so that the house cannot be seen when coming down, the south-facing light and green forest can be brought into the house. In addition, the long walls cover the yard, so you can enjoy barbecue without worrying about the view.

The second disadvantage of the land is the retaining wall! The retaining wall, which is higher than the house, seems to block the view and make you feel stuffy, but in reality, it blocks the wind. The retaining wall is located in the north, where there is no sun and only the wind blows. It is said that this wall is sturdy because it blocks the cold wind that comes in during the winter.

The last disadvantage of the land is the low building coverage ratio! Only 5 people live in a 22-pyeong house. Each person needs their own room, as well as a kitchen and office space, so the living room was pushed to the basement. However, this problem can be solved by boldly installing a sunken space! Thanks to not one but two sunken spaces, sufficient light enters the basement. Since it is a place where moisture can easily form, water channels were created in the inner concrete to prevent defects, and blocks were added on top of it to finish. Thanks to this, the basement is quite comfortable.

The design started with the focus on providing each person with their own personal space from the beginning. The architect husband put even more effort into building the house so that each family member could be satisfied with their own space. The architect saw the potential, not the shortcomings, of the ugly land. We explore the extreme house building of the architect husband who eventually overcame the limitations of the land.

The first architectural exploration house, challenging 0% defects!

Seosan, Chungnam, a modern house located in a beautiful mountainous area. It looks ordinary from the outside, but it is said that there is a great deal of know-how hidden inside!? Built with the confidence of a site manager with 30 years of experience! An architectural expert who has challenged 0% defects. However, since it is his first time building his own house, although he has built dozens of hotels and apartments, he said that it took 10 years just to prepare and 3 years to build…

The couple dreamed of living in the countryside in the distant future, and for 10 years, they visited this mountain every weekend to plant and tend to flowers and trees. The husband, who had been working at construction sites for a long time, said that he was careful from the very beginning to dig the ground, saying that he had made a promise to build a house that was as sturdy as possible.

The house had to be built on a hillside, but it had to be higher than the road to allow for natural drainage, so there were a lot of concerns. The husband carefully made the site, taking into account the view from the first and second floors. That’s how the house construction began in earnest.

The most important thing to my husband is a house without defects! He couldn’t tolerate even a single speck of dust on a single brick, so he brushed and dried each brick repeatedly. He received 10 samples to select the best bricks! He said that he only selected products that passed the water absorption test for the long bricks used as exterior materials. He even went to the site in the middle of the night with just one piece of reinforcement and counted the spacing and number of reinforcement bars… My husband, who couldn’t give up his meticulousness even as the construction period got longer and longer, eventually declared early retirement.

A couple who gave up retirement to build and live properly. No matter how flawless the house is, if maintenance is difficult, it will be a complete failure! In order to minimize maintenance, they used ceramic siding panels on the outside, and chose artificial grass for the balcony instead of floor tiles that could come off in the future! It looks like a flat roof on the outside, but the roof slopes toward the backyard, so water drains well, so there is no need to worry about water leaks.

Even in a 60-pyeong house with lots of windows, built with expert know-how, the maintenance fee is only 100,000 won! In the summer, solar panels are enough, and in the winter, firewood and a fireplace are enough. In the end, the husband overcame the limitation that ‘there is no house without defects’! Let’s explore his challenge.
