Taean is big (泰), and An (安) is comfortable. Taean is located in the northwestern part of Chungcheongnam-do. Taean is a comfortable place and a good place to live, just like its name. And it is a land with a beautiful and long coastline of over 500km.

Anmyeondo’s Kkotji Beach is the number one destination for a beautiful sunset and a seaside trip, and from the unique desert landscape of the Sinduri Coastal Sand Dunes to arboretums filled with gorgeous summer flowers like hydrangeas and lotuses – a place with diverse natural scenery that feels new the more you get to know it.

The sea is bustling with seasonal seafood and surfers enjoying surfing, and farmers who have finished harvesting before the rainy season are enjoying their summer vacation. The summer of Taean people is expected to be filled with romance this year as well!

There is an exhibition hall where you can see relics from the Goryeo Dynasty excavated from the sea off Taean, and a memorial hall for overcoming oil spill damage that shows painful memories and hope… In Taean, you can experience various cultures that are hard to find in other regions.

A place where you can walk along the pine-scented seaside road, see summer flowers blooming everywhere, and hear stories told by the sea. Let’s head to Taean, where natural treasures provided by the vast sea live and breathe.

This week (August 19th – August 22nd) at 7:20 PM, the 4-part series ‘Flowers, Sunset and Sea, Taean’ will air on EBS 1TV.

Anmyeondo’s number one tourist destination, Kkotji Beach

Anmyeondo, the 7th largest island in Korea. The Kkotji Beach on Anmyeondo is a place bustling with tourists every summer who want to enjoy water sports. The reason why Kkotji Beach is especially famous is because of the Halmi and Halabi rocks. It becomes an island at high tide and is connected to the land at low tide, boasting a variety of scenery.

Taean’s local food, Gegukji

Insun runs a local food specialty restaurant in Anmyeon-eup. The menu that customers look for is definitely Gegukji. Gegukji, made by boiling crabs, aged kimchi, and various vegetables, is a local dish of Taean with a refreshing and tangy broth. In addition to Gegukji, Insun also makes stir-fried cuttlefish, a favorite of her granddaughter, when she visits her grandmother’s house.

“I’m happy when guests come and say the food is delicious, and when my granddaughter says it’s delicious too.”

An exotic temple across the sea

Anmyeonam, a special temple located on the eastern coast of Anmyeondo. Anmyeonam is a modern temple founded in 1998.
It is loved as a local attraction because you can take in the ocean view at a glance from in front of the temple. In particular, the Bujangtap, one of the buildings that stands out in Anmyeonam, is a tower built to commemorate the well-being of the people who suffered from the oil spill accident.

Byeongsul Bay clams embraced by the sea and tidal flats

Byeongsulman Village, which lives on the tidal flats as a precious living space. Clams are a valuable source of livelihood and food for the residents of Byeongsulman Village. Today, too, the villagers go out to the tidal flats to dig for clams.

“I dug clams to support my children, send them to college, feed my family, and take care of my elderly parents.”

The villagers who finished their work gathered in small groups at the village restaurant to share kalguksu made with clams dug up directly from the tidal flats.

We take a look at the precious gifts the sea has given us and the stories of the people of Anmyeondo.
