Galnaktang, the dish that continues the reputation of octopus
“In the old days, there were a lot of octopuses in the sea in front of Miam. At that time, there was a large cattle market next to Dokcheonjang. So, they started making galnaktang by combining beef and octopus.”
Dokcheonjang is an oil market that opens on the last 4th and 9th of every month. It was once known as a distribution center for seafood from the sea to each region. Yeongam was also famous for producing octopus before the reclamation project! Its reputation continues with galnaktang. Around 30 stores specialize in octopus, but the one they all serve is galnaktang. It is considered the best health food by boiling ribs and octopus together. We hear the story of tidal flats and galnaktang from Maeng Jeong-ja, who runs an octopus restaurant.

Now is the season! Figs, the jewel of summer
Figs are native to the Mediterranean! They are difficult to grow, but Yeongam Samho-eup is an exception. The Mediterranean climate is the best environment for growing figs! That’s why it is famous as a breeding ground and the largest fig production area in the country. However, its weakness is its vulnerability to cold! After a long period of research, farmer Lee Jin-seong developed a fig farming method that can be produced even in winter, which is a great help to farmers’ income.
