On Saturday, July 20th at 8:55 PM, the LNG production base and salt farm episode of ‘Extreme Jobs’ will air on EBS1TV.

Natural gas and salt are essential to our lives. There are people who do their best to supply these two things safely in the best condition. Liquefied natural gas, mainly used as city gas[ Liquefied Natural Gas ]. And salt, which plays the most important role in adding flavor to food. Let’s visit the hot field where these two natural ingredients are struggling.

From LNG ships to production facilities, everything about LNG!

Liquefied natural gas, more familiar to us as city gas[ Liquefied Natural Gas ]. It is a fuel gas that is mainly supplied through pipelines to homes and factories in the city. Since it is a fuel that is imported in its entirety, safe transportation and storage are of the utmost importance.

LNG is liquefied by cooling to -162℃, compressed to 1/600 of its volume, and then transported by ship. The scale of the work is so large that four tugboats are needed just to dock a 95,000-ton ship at a port. The towing work begins with tension as the fuel is loaded. After the ship is safely anchored, the unloading work begins. The amount of LNG that needs to be unloaded is a whopping 130,000 KL (65,000 tons), and the unloading work takes 24 hours straight. There is no time to rest even for a moment as frequent checks are also required for safe unloading. However, since the work is to deliver energy that is essential for life, the workers willingly take on the work, sweating profusely.

Meanwhile, another LNG production facility under construction. Here, the roof air raising work of the LNG storage tank is in full swing. The roof air raising work refers to the cutting-edge technology that raises the roof installed on the ground by about 45 meters using internal pressure. Since the LNG storage tank roof is 90 meters in diameter and weighs over 1,000 tons, the conventional method of work is dangerous. That is why this technology was used. Even while the roof is being raised, confirmation and additional welding for accurate process are essential! If there is a mistake, the roof may collapse and have to start over from the beginning, so they are very careful. The best engineers are pouring all their efforts into the construction of safe LNG storage tanks. Let’s meet the people who are doing their best behind the scenes to ensure that LNG, a convenient fuel, can be used safely.

The pure white result of sweat, salt

Domestic sea salt is rich in minerals and is known to help with skin health and alleviate hair loss symptoms. There is a father and son who do not hesitate to do difficult things to obtain this sea salt.

The salt work starts at 4:30 in the morning. The salt farm, which is 49,000m² (15,000 pyeong), is cleaned thoroughly one by one, and then the salt pans are filled with seawater. After that, the work of gathering the salt crystals formed on the salt pans by pushing them with a shovel begins. They say that every part of their body, from their shoulders to their waist, hurts because they keep repeating the same movements. Even their fingers are bent at every joint. However, they say that they feel so proud and happy when they see customers visiting them in person to buy salt.

We go to see a father and son working silently, without rest, under the scorching sun to make clean salt.
