18-year-old Seo Hyun-i lives a life a little different from her peers. She has been taking care of her sick mother every day since she was in elementary school, and she does housework like cooking, cleaning, and laundry in her mother’s stead. Her mother, Eun-ju (53), who used to be a loving and caring person, suffered from complex pain syndrome in a car accident and has been suffering from pain 24 hours a day, making it difficult for her to move her body. She sweats a lot because of her illness, but it is also very difficult for her to wash herself, so Seo Hyun-i washes her mother’s hair and supports her whenever she goes out, always staying by her sick mother’s side. Eun-ju (53) feels sorry for making her daughter suffer because of her illness.

Eun-ju raised Seo-hyeon alone after divorcing her husband. Then, when Seo-hyeon was nine years old, she got into a car accident and developed a chronic disease called complex pain syndrome. She had surgery to insert a pain-reducing device in her lower back because of the extreme pain that made daily life impossible, but the pain still bothers her. She clenched her teeth so hard that most of her teeth fell out, making it very difficult for her to chew food. She has to have surgery to replace the stimulator battery in May of next year, but Eun-ju is more worried about her daughter who has dropped out of school than about her own pain. After Seo-hyeon saw her mother collapse in the bathroom alone and lose consciousness, she couldn’t let her mind rest while she was at school, so she ended up dropping out of middle school. She tried to study on her own and take the middle school qualification exam, but it wasn’t as easy as she thought to study while taking care of her mother on top of all the housework. Now in her second year of high school, she often has trouble sleeping at night because she thinks she’s falling behind her peers who are studying at school.

The house where Seohyun and her mother currently live is a small studio apartment measuring about 8 pyeong. There is not even a proper desk and chair for Seohyun to study, and the walls are covered in mold, making it a poor environment for her mother and Seohyun to live in. Her mother says that what hurts the most is that she could not provide a study room for Seohyun. She says that if she moved to a rental house in the city, she could get help taking care of her mother and Seohyun could study in a better environment. However, even though she won the lottery for the rental house, she cannot move because she does not have the deposit. Also, Seohyun has not yet passed the middle school qualification exam because she is taking care of her mother. She tries to make up for her living expenses by working part-time at a convenience store whenever she has time, but her current income is not enough to cover the tuition, and she is at a loss.
