It has been confirmed that the Ministry of Justice has been operating the “Legal Tech Task Force (TF),” created during former Minister Park Beom-gye, for the third year, claiming to design a system related to “Legal Tech” that combines science and technology with the legal industry. The Ministry of Justice is in a position that it cannot disclose specific details related to the operation of the TF.

On the 1st, the Ministry of Justice said in the Office of Representative Yoo Sang-beom, the People’s Power of the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee, “We are running a TF, conducting various discussions on system improvement to settle and nurture the legal tech industry, and ways to secure the publicity of the lawyer system.” He did not submit a list of internal and external committee members as well as specific details of the discussion, saying, “It may interfere with fair performance.”

However, the Ministry of Justice announced that “a total of 12.6 million won was executed as meeting allowances in 2021-2022” regarding the TF budget.

Previously, the Ministry of Justice launched a TF in September 2021, saying, “We will listen to various positions and opinions related to the legal tech industry and design the system in a way that protects people’s rights more deeply through in-depth discussions.”

The Ministry of Justice is in the position that the TF has not been eliminated and is still in operation even after Minister Han Dong-hoon took office, but in the legal world, the word “Isn’t it actually a long time ago?” One lawyer pointed out, “I’ve never heard of anything being discussed at TF.” Minister Han has never specifically mentioned Legal Tech. Following last year, this year’s Ministry of Justice’s business report did not include legal tech-related content.

An official from the Ministry of Justice said, “The legal tech industry has a side to improve the public’s access to justice, but there are also voices of concern that it may undermine the public nature of the lawyer system.” did.

Regarding this, Rep. Yoo Sang-beom said, “With the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology such as ChatGPT, considerable changes are expected in legal services and domestic and foreign legal markets, and we must prepare for them.” We need to devise measures to harmonize the development of the legal tech industry with the public by actively communicating.”
