‘World Theme Travel – 6400km of the Untamed, Western China’ Part 1 ‘Summer in the Frontier’ will air on EBS1 TV today (26th) at 8:40 PM. Lee Chang-woon, CEO of K-content development company, will join.

To the center of the ancient Silk Road, the unknown land of the West!

Discover traces of the colorful cultures that blossomed along the Silk Road, and discover hidden secrets in the vast land, including canyons, grasslands, snow-capped mountains, lakes, and deserts.

Following the traces of the Silk Road, you will also immerse yourself in the vivid daily lives of minority groups living in remote areas, past and present.

The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, formerly known as the Western Regions, was a strategic point on the Silk Road. We begin our journey in Urumqi, the gateway to the Western Regions. We will continue our journey along the ‘S101 Road’ that begins here. This road is famous for its beautiful terrain, with snow-capped mountains, canyons, and grasslands every hundred li. The excitement is short-lived, as the first heavy rain in 28 years closes many roads, leaving us stranded. However, finding new paths and joys is ‘travel’! We turn north and head to Kanas Lake, a natural masterpiece.

On the way to the lake, I was captivated by the magnificent canyon I happened to come across. The intense red color of the Anjihai Grand Canyon, a thousand-foot vertical canyon created by the river, is impressive. It takes 10 hours of nonstop driving to reach Kanas Lake. In the meantime, the scenery outside the window changes frequently. After passing the red and rugged Moguicheng (魔鬼城) that looks like Mars, I drive for a while and a green carpet of grassland unfolds.

Kazakh nomads live in the steppes. The Kazakhs have lived with nature for generations, raising horses and sheep. We will spend a day in their traditional dwelling, the ger (Bao in Chinese) and experience the nomads’ daily lives. We will also immerse ourselves in the history and culture of the Kazakhs, as well as their proud songs, and look back at the unfamiliar sight of blood pressure being measured in the ger, and learn about the origins of the Tea Horse Road.

Finally arrived at Kanas Lake, the best scenic spot in northern Xinjiang. Designated as the highest-level tourist destination in China, this is the only place in China that has the natural environment of Southern Siberia. Siberian conifers boast greenery, and the jade-colored waters of glacial water flow leisurely. For a moment, you will feel as if you have come to the Alps. Climb the 1,000 steps to Kanas Lake’s observation deck, Gwanyu-dae (觀魚臺), and enjoy the magnificent view of the jade-colored lake.
