A special winter trip in search of warmth during the cold season! Let’s go to the Philippines, a country with warm tropical charm. The journey begins in Siquijor, a mysterious island that is still unknown to many. In Lazi, the southern city of the island, there is San Isidro Labrador Church, which contains the history of the Spanish period. You can feel the living history in the wooden floor that has been preserved for over 100 years, and in the building that has stood strong even though the light has faded.
Leaving the church behind, we set off to discover the mysterious story behind Siquijor Island. You come across the Old Enchanted Balete Tree, a huge tree where the giant Kapre, the guardian deity of Siquijor, lives. The tree, which has grown for nearly 500 years with its roots and stems intertwined, has a power that overwhelms people, perhaps because of its grandeur or its legendary power. The pond created under the tree also adds to the mystery. Another giant(?) lives inside the pond. It’s a huge doctor fish the size of your forearm, or rather, your calf! How would it feel to entrust your dead skin care to a fish bigger than your foot?
Time to be released from the Old Tree’s magic and return to reality. This time, we visited Cambugahay Falls, another famous attraction in Siquijor. It is an emerald three-tiered waterfall amidst a tropical rainforest, and the thrill of this place is the thrilling experience that adds to the beautiful scenery. After a diving experience that plunges you into the emeralds, you can also meet a human drone that flies in the air and takes pictures. A human drone that climbs a rope like Tarzan and takes photos of your life! What is the result?
Among the tastes of travel, a feast of traditional culture and taste cannot be left out. Take a look into traditional culture at the Sabong stadium, a Philippine cockfight. All over the stadium, the majestic, sturdy chickens are cockfighters who receive the highest expectations from people. In the Philippines, Sabon is a legal cockfight and a national sport. A cockfighting arena where fierce fights take place! The joys and sorrows of those who bet money are mixed, and the enthusiasm for the cockfight grows even stronger.
Near the cockfighting stadium, on one side of the cockfighting farm, a barbecue is in full swing. Lechon is a whole roasted pork that is eaten only on special occasions. It turned out to be the site of two children’s birthday party! People from all over the neighborhood gather to celebrate the occasion. We share people’s joy by tasting ‘ear’, the most delicious part of lechon.
The next journey continues to Apo Island, which boasts a natural beauty. Sea turtles live on this quiet and secluded island, an hour and a half away by boat from Siquijor. Swim with sea turtles in the clear sea and fall into a time of mystery and fantasy. A dreamy scenery, Apo Island. I hope that the beauty of this place will shine for a long time.
