Let’s go on a very unique road to Germany, guided by a curator who has lived in Germany for 12 years!

‘Life is too short to drink bad wine.’ Recalling Goethe’s words, the German wine expert’s first journey follows the scent of grapes flowing along the Mosel and Rhine rivers. The history of German wine began 2,000 years ago with the Roman Empire. Trier, a city located near the Mosel River, was the first city built by the ancient Roman Empire when it set foot on German soil. Porta Nigra is a representative example of Roman-era buildings gathered in the old town. The walls and gates built to defend against external enemies still guard the streets of Trier.

Weinstand, a street wine stall that stands out as you walk through the old town of Trier, mainly sells white wine and Riesling wine produced along the Mosel River. Riesling has difficult taste requirements, including complex aromas, high acidity, and delicate fruit flavors, but the unique environment of the Moselle River satisfies all these requirements. In this region, which has a cooler climate and large daily temperature ranges compared to grape producing regions in other countries, the grape harvest period can be adjusted for more than six weeks, producing wines of various tastes. The lack of sunlight is solved by creating vineyards on high slopes near the river.

In the famous grape-producing region of Piesport, visit the best Riesling vineyards called ‘Goldtröpfchen’ and see a traditional grape pressing facility used during Roman times.

Along with the Mosel River, the Rhein River is the center of Riesling wine. In Rüdesheim, a city called the ‘Pearl of the Rhine’, we pass the Niederwalddenkmal, which overlooks vineyards and the Rhine River, and visit the farm of Jochen Ratzenberger, an acquaintance of the curator. I experience firsthand the steep slopes of the vineyards along the Rhine River and think about the sweat of the farmers. The Rhine River not only produces the best grapes, but has always played an important role in German history. In the past, royal and noble families built castles along the river to admire and manage the Rhine River. Enjoy fragrant Riesling wine in an old-fashioned medieval castle, as if you were a castle owner at that time, and even see the river dyed red. Immerse yourself in the deep atmosphere of the Rhine River.
