The first journey of the Chinese historical travel tour follows the Taihang Mountains. Linzhou, located at the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains, has suffered from drought and famine since ancient times due to its geological inability to store water. It was Hong Chi-chiu (红旗渠, Hong Gi-geo), the Great Wall of Water, who put an end to a history that was so miserable that there are records of people eating people.

The government and residents worked together to complete the artificial waterway by cutting down the mountain and drilling into the rock wall in about 9 years using only a hammer and chisel. Its length is a whopping 1,500 km. Walk along a long waterway called the modern-day miracle of Wugongyi Mountain. Qingnian-dong (Youth-dong), a 623-meter-long tunnel that was constructed by over 300 young people, is considered one of the most difficult sections to construct. There, we meet local people who are trying to inherit the indomitable spirit.

We visit another attraction called the miracle of the Taihang Mountains. A remote place among remote areas, surrounded by rugged mountains on three sides and cliffs on the other. The villagers, who had to cross a steep mountain path to get out of the village, began digging a path into the cliff in 1972. The residents who carried out the construction with hammers and chisels completed the road after five years of hard work. The road, named after the village, is now a more famous tourist destination than the village itself. Kkuryang-dong, built in the middle of a steep cliff, is full of traces of the sweat and effort of the residents who dug a 1.2km long tunnel with their bare hands.

The last place I visited was Taihang Grand Canyon. At Wangxiangyan (王相岩. Wang Sangam), which means rock of kings and ministers, you can hear the interesting secret story of Mujeong (武丁), the ruler of the Yin Dynasty, and the prime minister Buyeol (傅說). And at Taohwagu (桃花谷, Taohwagok), where peach blossoms are said to bloom even in the harsh winter, enjoy the scenery while reciting Lee Baek’s Q&A in the Mountains.
