Come to Laos during the rainy season! You will discover the true face of Laos that you have never seen before.

Vang Vieng, a major tourist city in Laos. What does this place, famous as a vacation spot for travelers from all over the world, look like during the rainy season? However, the road leading into the village is unusual. The Nam Song River has overflowed due to heavy rain, and the entire village is submerged! Despite this serious situation, Laotian people take out boats to get on, and children even swim, remaining calm. Even the flooded village is crowded with people who have come out to catch fish, and a surprise fishing ground opens unexpectedly. Laotian people say that they will catch fish with traditional fishing tools that look like nets and cook fish dishes. Curious about the taste, we are invited to the home of a resident we met at the fishing ground, and we head to the house together, frying freshly caught fish whole and savoring the true taste of the Laotian rainy season.

Next, we head to Si Phan Don, a landlocked country where you can find ‘islands’. We head to Don Det, the most famous island in Si Phan Don, which has over 4,000 islands. It is a tourist destination loved by travelers from all over the world as a resting place, but we explore Don Det, which is not a tourist destination but a place filled with the daily lives of Laotian people during the rainy season. We meet the big shot of the Laotian fish market, which buys at least 700kg and up to 2 tons of fish every day and sends them to various parts of Laos, and we tour the fish market, which has become even more abundant during the rainy season, and feel the abundance of the Mekong River.

We visited the famous rainy season spot that Si Phan Don is proud of. The overwhelming presence felt from the loud noise that shakes the axis! The spectacular view of Khon Pha Pheng Waterfall unfolds before your eyes. Khon Pha Pheng Waterfall is said to be the widest in Asia. During the rainy season, it boasts a volume and rapids reminiscent of the ocean. However, there are people in the strong waves of the waterfall! Fishermen who cast nets into the rapids and catch fish by walking a tightrope over the waterfall. Through the fishermen who risk their lives and jump into the rough waters of the rainy season every day, we get a glimpse into the true lives of Laotians living in the rain.

On the way to another rainy season attraction, we met children picking ‘Maktan’ fruit. We wondered how to eat the strange-looking ‘Maktan’ fruit, so we decided to teach the children how to eat it. After pounding it with a knife for a long time, the white flesh of the fruit was revealed! The sweet fruit, which is also used as a raw material for sugar, is also a very popular snack among Laotian children. While tasting ‘Maktan’ and talking to the children, their nicknames were unusual. One child’s nickname was ‘Ham Noi’! What is the meaning of the nickname that made everyone burst into laughter?

After parting with the kids, we went to Khon Pa Soi Waterfall, the representative waterfall of Si Phan Don. The calm waters of the Mekong River flow into the waterfall like angry bulls during the rainy season. Two people stand out in the yellowish rapids. They jump into the fierce waters of the rainy season to catch bigger and fresher fish. They continue to catch fish in the dizzying rapids by going back and forth between the Lee traps, fish traps set up under the waterfall. The fierce lives of Si Phan Don fishermen, who risk their lives, add to the moving wonders of the rainy season.
