Korean oriental medicine is pioneering not only cosmetic surgery but also new fields we have never seen before. “We will be sending traditional doctors (oriental medicine doctors) to Korea, so I hope they can teach us the art of oriental medicine.”

On the 27th of last month, Deputy Director Le Ng Cong Thao of the Binh Duong Province Health Department, who visited the Binh Duong Oriental Medical Hospital in Binh Duong Province, Vietnam to encourage medical volunteer work, made the following request to the Oriental medicine doctors of the Daejeon Oriental Medicine Association.

In Vietnam, unlike Korea, the College of Oriental Medicine is included in the medical school. It is a system that determines whether to become a doctor or an oriental medicine doctor after attending medical school for four years. If you are selected to become an Oriental Medical Doctor, you will learn Oriental Medicine for two years. However, it mainly focuses on acupuncture and herbal medicine prescriptions, and hospital facilities are at a similar level to those in Korea in the 1970s.

Korean oriental medicine, which has excellent technology, is popular in Binh Duong Province. On the morning of the 27th alone, there were about 100 patients. Patients who complained of neck, shoulder, and back pain were relieved through acupuncture, herbal medicine, and Chuna therapy here, and both patients and their guardians were surprised and gave a thumbs up.

At Banh Phuc Hospital in Binh Duong Province, where I had provided medical service the day before, about 200 people came to the clinic after hearing rumors that Oriental medicine doctors had arrived from Korea, forming a long line in the clinic. Over the two days of the 26th and 27th, the number of patients treated by Korean Oriental medicine doctors reached approximately 400. The Daejeon Oriental Medicine Association resumed medical services, which had been suspended after the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), in response to the pandemic.

When oriental medicine doctors used medical devices such as ultrasound machines in their medical services, Vietnamese oriental medicine doctors looked amazed. Director Pham Duy Tam of Binh Duong Oriental Medicine Hospital said, “I want to learn the excellent techniques of Korean Oriental medicine,” and asked, “In particular, please tell me how to use herbal acupuncture and ultrasound together.”

Kim Yong-jin, president of the Daejeon Oriental Medical Association, said, “With the use of ultrasound, it has become possible to place herbal acupuncture in more precise locations when shoulder and neck pain occurs. “We will hold regular seminars locally and pass on technology,” he said. Chairman Kim also said, “The government’s recently announced 4th Oriental Medicine Promotion and Development Comprehensive Plan also contains content related to support for revitalizing global exchange and cooperation in Oriental medicine,” and added, “We will make efforts to publicize the excellence of domestic Oriental medicine.”

At this event, Yoon Je-pil, president of the Korea Health Industry Association (director of Phil Oriental Medicine Hospital), who succeeded in exporting oriental medicine pain cream from Vietnam, said, “We will make efforts not only to Vietnam but also to enter Southeast Asia such as Laos and Cambodia.”

Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo, who made a surprise visit to Binh Duong Oriental Medical Hospital on the 27th, said, “I came here in person and realized the popularity of oriental medicine,” and added, “We will also open an oriental medicine department to provide integrated medicine at Daejeon Medical Center, which is scheduled to open in 2028.”
