◇Read the Constitution Once in Your Life/Written by Lee Hyo-won/328 pages/18,500 won/Hyundae Jisung

Sometimes I look up and look at the sky. Every time I do, I am amazed at how clear and blue the sky is, and surprisingly, I have never really looked up at the sky properly. What was I so distracted by?

The ‘Constitution’ is exactly like that. It is the mother of all laws that we encounter every day and the principle that constitutes the Republic of Korea. However, other than ‘The Republic of Korea is a democratic republic’ (Article 1, Paragraph 1) and ‘The sovereignty of the Republic of Korea resides in the people, and all state powers emanate from the people’ (Article 1, Paragraph 2), we do not know much about it. The meaning contained therein goes without saying.

A constitutional scholar who was a prosecutor wrote about the ‘constitution’. However, it is not a constitutional textbook for law students. It explains the reason and background of these constitutional provisions, and what our society dreams of and aims for because of them, and it is like an old mathematician explaining to students the principles of a mathematical formula that no one teaches. The formula that is giving you a headache right now was actually created to explain this beautiful world…

“We should not love the country itself, but love the ‘reason for loving the country.’ Blind love for the country runs the risk of destroying everyone. … The reason we love the Republic of Korea is precisely because of its constitutional values.” (From the preface)

Following the author’s explanation, we can vividly picture the country that the ‘Fathers of the Constitution’ dreamed of. At the same time, it is embarrassing to realize how far we have strayed from that ideal, whether intentionally or not. The author says, “The greatest gift we can receive by reading the Constitution is ‘the courage to move forward tomorrow. ‘” Sometimes, we feel that life is meaningless because we are overwhelmed by the power that is difficult to handle and are consumed by the responsibility that is given, but we can reestablish the meaning of life through the Constitution, the foundation of the Republic of Korea. It is a book that gives us the feeling that we get when we look up at the sky. The subtitle is ‘On the standard that holds the center of life whenever it wavers.’
