The year is 1861, just before the American Civil War. The setting is the Tara Plantation in Georgia, in the American South. Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh), the eldest daughter of a plantation owner, is the center of attention for many men, not only for her pretty looks but also for her manly, spunky personality.
However, the man she loves, Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard), is interested in her cousin Melanie (Olivia de Havilland), not her. Scarlett, true to her bold personality, approaches Ashley directly, but is rejected, and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) finds out about the situation.
Rhett, originally from Charleston, has a reputation for being a bit of a brat, but he also has a masculine personality that makes him a worthy opponent for the sassy Scarlett. The two continue their thrilling tightrope-walking relationship.
Shocked by the news that her beloved Ashley is marrying her cousin Melanie, Scarlett impulsively accepts the proposal of her sister India’s boyfriend, Melanie’s younger brother Charles, and marries him. However, when war breaks out, Charles enlists in the army and is killed shortly afterwards. As a result, Scarlett becomes a widow at a young age.
But Scarlett is fed up with having to wear mourning clothes for a man she doesn’t even love. Scarlett’s mother suggests that her widowed daughter go to Atlanta and live with Melanie. Scarlett goes to Atlanta as her mother says, but meets Ashley again there. And she realizes that Ashley really loves Melanie, not her.
Meanwhile, the war situation is turning against the South, and the Union army invades Atlanta, Georgia. After Melanie gives birth to her child, Scarlett rides Rhett’s carriage and almost dies while returning to her hometown of Tara.
Scarlett, who returned to her hometown of Tara, tries to revive the devastated land. The war is finally over, and Ashley, who went to the battlefield, returns home. Scarlett still can’t forget Ashley, but she is tormented by Ashley’s refusal to accept her.
Also, while struggling to pay the $300 in taxes, her insane father falls off his horse and dies. At that time, Scarlett finds out that Rhett, who made a lot of money because of the war, is in a military prison, and she goes to see him because she has a crush on him and asks him to lend her $300 using herself as collateral, but is flatly rejected.
And then, by chance, she meets her sister’s fiancé, Frank Kennedy. When Scarlett finds out that he has money, she lies that her sister is marrying another man, and she marries Frank herself. However, Frank also gets shot and killed while attending a political meeting.
Scarlett’s life is saved thanks to Rhett, but she becomes a widow again. And she marries the rich Rhett again. However, Scarlett’s feelings for Ashley do not change, and her married life with Rhett is not smooth either. The two of them, who keep getting into conflicts, eventually suffer the pain of losing their child and are unable to fulfill their love.
