The film is set in the 16th year of King Jeongjo’s reign. King Jeongjo faces a great crisis due to suspicious incidents surrounding the corruption of government officials. The film depicts the story of Joseon’s greatest detective stepping in to uncover the huge scandal that shakes Joseon. However, unlike the serious incidents, the film depicts the process of the clumsy genius detective solving the cases in a cheerful and lively way. It has raised expectations for a new genre and character by presenting a Korean detective character comparable to famous detective characters such as Britain’s Sherlock Holmes and America’s Hercule Poirot. The film is a film adaptation of the original novel “Secret of the Chaste Woman’s Gate” by the best-selling author Kim Tak-hwan. “The Secret of the Chaste Woman’s Gate” is the second story in the “Baektap-pa” series, a mystery novel that tells the story of young Silhak scholars set during the Jeongjo era in the late 18th century, one of the most interesting periods in Korean history.
