summary:

The 2004 Indonesian tsunami shocked the world by causing the greatest casualties in history. At the time, Haeundae native Man-sik, who was on an ocean-going fishing boat in the Indian Ocean, was swept away by the unexpected tsunami, and lost Yeon-hee’s father, whom he trusted and relied on, due to a single mistake. Because of this accident, he had no choice but to hide his feelings for Yeon-hee. Then one day, Man-sik decided to tell Yeon-hee his feelings that he had kept in his heart for a long time and prepared a wonderful proposal for her. Meanwhile, Dr. Kim Hwi, a geologist at the International Ocean Research Institute, discovered the shocking fact that the East Sea surrounding Tsushima Island and Haeundae was very similar to the Indonesian tsunami that occurred five years ago. He repeatedly emphasized that South Korea was not safe from tsunamis, but despite his warnings, the National Disaster and Safety Agency asserted that there was no chance of a tsunami hitting the Korean Peninsula based on geological and statistical data. Even at that moment, the ocean situation changes every moment, and finally, as Dr. Kim Hui claims, the Japanese island of Tsushima sinks, creating a giant tsunami. The giant tsunami rushes toward the millions of vacationers cooling off from the midsummer heat, the Busan citizens living peaceful lives, and Man-sik and Yeon-hee, who have just confirmed their feelings for each other, at a speed of 800 km/h…

Commentary:

Haeundae is a representative vacation spot in Korea where 1 million people gather every summer and a familiar place to all Koreans. The movie , which has a unique setting where a tsunami occurs in this place where many people’s various stories unfold, is different from Hollywood disaster movies. While existing Hollywood disaster movies have been unable to escape from a linear storyline while emphasizing external scale and attractions, , which tells the stories of people in the space called ‘Haeundae’, creates empathy with a solid story and fun. Rather than being obsessed with the subject of ‘tsunami’ that can be highlighted in a flashy way, it adds laughter and emotion, which are the codes preferred by the Korean people, to strong characters and melts our own emotions while maintaining the unique formula of ‘subject=people’.

In order to perfectly implement the huge tsunami that hits the Korean peninsula in the latter half of the film, around 200 CG experts from Korea and Hollywood, including Polygon Entertainment, where Hans Uhrik works, and Mopac Studio, a domestic CG company, joined forces. Polygon Entertainment, led by Hans Uhrik, was mainly in charge of the tsunami CG. Polygon Entertainment, which has been recognized for its unique system and technology through works such as , developed a new program that combined the existing commercialized ‘Mash Deformer’ (a method of continuously adding details to layers based on a basic program) with ‘Level Set’ (a method of implementing scenes where the water in the waves itself overflows and overflows) through . Rather than replicating their previous works, they created a tsunami that maintains a huge scale while reacting violently through advanced technology. In addition, CG scenes other than the tsunami also occupy a large portion, such as the situation before the tsunami hits and the situation of the streets being submerged in water after the tsunami hits. The place in charge of this work was Korea’s Mopac Studio. They mainly did the difficult work of partially building sets, expanding images, and synthesizing final data. The CG Dream Team, which worked in Korea and the US respectively, checked the progress of the work and shared opinions through video conferences for 1-2 hours starting at 1 a.m. at night. Although there were some communication difficulties at first, they gradually became more in sync after working together every day for several months. The Korean and Hollywood CG Dream Teams, who shared the common goal of achieving the best CG quality, presented the best visuals that surpassed previous CGs through .
