One person was killed and two others were hospitalized yesterday afternoon when part of a crane fell from a building in downtown Fort Lauderdale, officials said, the Associated Press reported.
Crews were in the process of installing the crane during the construction of a tall building when a section being prepared to increase the height of the crane separated, Fort Lauderdale Fire Chief Steven Golan said at a news conference. The construction worker fell with the crane section, suffering fatal injuries, officials said. The crane itself remained attached to the building, BTA reported.
The crane section landed on a nearby bridge, damaging at least two cars, Golan said. A man and woman who were on the ground were taken to a nearby hospital where they are in stable condition. Another person was treated at the scene and refused to be transported to hospital.
The bridge was damaged by the fallen crane section, meaning the carriageway will be closed indefinitely while it is repaired. The river that runs under the bridge was also closed to marine traffic.
