Before the violence in Dhaka surrounding the quota reform movement, 1 lakh SIM users had suddenly entered the capital, said the State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the “Tree for Peace” ceremony to plant 100,000 saplings across the country on the occasion of Prime Minister’s ICT Advisor Sajib Wazed Joy’s birthday at Dak Bhavan in Agargaon, capital.

Palak said that one lakh new SIMs were added to Dhaka’s network on July 18 before the attacks across the capital. These SIM users enter Dhaka from different places. The destruction was carried out from 3 pm to 9 pm that day. Attacks were carried out on important government buildings including Setu Bhavan, BTV, Metrorail, Disaster Management Building.

The state minister said that government buildings and vehicles were selectively vandalized. Apart from this, terrorists have attacked government officials and employees, police force and even journalists.

Stating that misinformation is being spread abroad on the issue of internet, the state minister said that the government has not stopped the internet. Broadband services could not be maintained due to damage to transmission lines. However, misinformation is being spread about this matter abroad.

State Minister Palak also said that there is a meeting with mobile operators on Sunday. The meeting will be held at 9 am. If the meeting is satisfied, the 4G mobile network will be opened on Sunday-Monday.

Directorate General of Posts Tarun Kanti Sikder presided over the function. Information Technology Secretary Md. was present among others. Samsul Arefin, Post and Telecommunication Secretary Dr. Mushfiqur Rahman and BTRC Chairman Engineer Mohiuddin Ahmed.
