10 killed in fuel tanker explosion in South Africa; 40 people were injured

A fuel tanker exploded in the South African city of Boksburg, east of Johannesburg. According to the emergency services department, ten people died and around 40 people were injured in the accident.

A tanker carrying 60,000 liters of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) got stuck under a bridge 100 meters from the Tambo Memorial Hospital on Saturday morning. Then caught fire. Firefighters were called to douse the fire but unfortunately the tanker exploded.

So far the number of people killed in the incident has reached 10. The injured have been admitted to the hospital. AFP reports that the death toll is likely to rise as 19 people are in critical condition and 15 are in stable but serious injuries. Six firefighters also sustained minor injuries.

Patients were evacuated from the hospital’s casualty after the explosion caused part of the roof to collapse.
