Octopus is a very playful and mischievous creature. It will surprise you in many ways. It has brain cells all over its body.
Here are ten interesting facts about this creature:

Octopus has a large nervous system in its body. That means the average octopus has 500 million neurons, or brain cells. This is a ‘brain size’ comparable to smaller mammals such as dogs.
In dogs, unlike humans, most of these neurons are found in the arms of the octopus, rather than in the brain. They actually have almost twice as many brain cells in their hands as there are in the brain. Each of the tentacles in an octopus’s hand can contain up to 10,000 neurons to handle their sense of taste and touch.
2. Octopuses have good memory skills – they can be trained

Research over the past seventy years has shown that octopuses can be trained to perform simple tasks.
In one particular experiment, several octopuses pulled a lever together to pick up a fish.
Also, the octopuses were subjected to visual tests to perform simple tasks such as remembering an object with one eye closed.
It was a long process. But the octopus fared better than many other animals, including pigeons.

In the experiment mentioned above, three octopuses were involved. They were named Albert, Bertram and Charles.
Albert and Bertram did very well. At the same time, Charles accidentally broke the lever.
Not only that, but Charles kept pouring water on the experimenters. There were octopuses that behaved very mischievously in various aquariums. Some of the octopuses have learned to turn off the lights by pouring water on the bulbs and causing short circuits.
At the University of Otago in New Zealand, an octopus had to be released back into its habitat due to these pranks.

Some octopuses in laboratories can be seen playing with pill bottles and spending time playfully bouncing the bottle back and forth against the flow of water from the tank’s valve.

For many species of octopus, you can tell if they are male or female by whether they have a groove under their third right arm.
If it has such a groove, it is a male. They use this hand in mating. What they do is extend that hand towards the female octopus. If the female octopus accepts, sperm will be sent from the groove on the underside of the arm. Female octopuses often store these sperm for a short period of time before fertilization.
7. ‘High-fives’ is their usual way of greeting

Normally when octopuses move around, they are sometimes seen flapping their arms towards other octopuses in their burrows.
Professor Stefan Linqvist, who studies octopus behavior, says the behavior is actually ‘high fives’. He thinks this will help the octopuses recognize each other.
