A few days before the tax notices were sent, the tax authorities announced that despite the withholding tax, some taxpayers will have to put their hands in their pockets.

The withholding tax has facilitated the payment of taxes for many French people. So if the rate perfectly represents the level of taxable income, then the payment is simply made step by step. On the other hand, it may happen that this rate of levy is insufficient, in which case a balance of tax will have to be paid in the fall by certain taxpayers.

This scenario may seem unusual, but according to the Directorate General of Public Finance, it concerns nearly 9.6 million households. The amount to be collected would reach nearly 21.7 billion euros, ie a significant average of 2,259 euros per household. These figures communicated by the DGFIP to the echoes remain quite close to those of 2022, the average was then 2100 euros.

Refunds expected

The tax notice should arrive from July 26 to August 4 for those who have completed their declaration online and from July 24 to August 22 for others. If for some it could be a bad surprise, for others it would be quite the opposite.

When the levy is too high, for example when the household benefits from a tax credit or suffers from a drop in income, then the DGFIP makes a refund. In 2022, the average reimbursement amounted to 844 euros per household. This year, 13 billion euros should be distributed among 15 million households.
