A study found that 10% of swimmers who participated in swimming competitions in the Seine River in Paris during the Olympics developed gastroenteritis.

According to the American medical media outlet ‘MediPage Today’ on the 21st (local time), 1 in 10 athletes who participated in swimming competitions in the Seine River during the 2024 Paris Olympics suffered from gastroenteritis.

The media reported that this is a much higher rate compared to previous Olympics, where the rate was 1-3%.

“About 10 percent of athletes competing in triathlons or open-water swimming events have developed gastroenteritis,” said Dr. Jonathan Finnough, chief medical officer for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC). “In contrast, in the same events at the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2021 Tokyo Olympics, only about 1 percent to 3 percent of athletes have developed gastroenteritis.”

The figures are based on injury and disease surveillance data compiled by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“It’s hard to make a direct comparison because past games were played in salt water, while these games were played in river water in an urban area,” Dr. Pinoff said. “Nevertheless, the infection rate at these Olympics was much higher than in the past.”

The water quality of the Seine River was one of the biggest controversies before the opening of the Paris Olympics. In response to the water quality controversy, French Sports Minister Amélie Oudea Castella and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo threw themselves into the Seine River and claimed that there was no problem. However, due to the rain that fell on the day of the opening ceremony, sewage and wastewater flowed directly into the Seine River, and E. coli and enterococci exceeding the standard were detected.

Concerns about the water quality of the Seine River have grown even more after Tyler Myslocuk (29, Canada), who competed in a triathlon on the 1st, vomited more than 10 times after crossing the finish line.

Belgian triathlete Claire Michel said on her Instagram that she had “three days of vomiting and diarrhea,” although tests showed that her symptoms were caused by a virus and not E. coli (bacteria).

Despite the controversy surrounding the Seine, the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games triathlon will also be held on the Seine. The 2024 Paris Paralympic Games will run from August 28 to September 8.
