‘I watch the sun rise at Yongamsa Temple in Okcheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, and eat bibimbap for lunch using Okcheon-gun’s specialty products. At night, I lie in a hammock and listen to classical music while looking at the stars in Okcheon-gun. After enjoying this kind of relaxation for my body and mind, I get an extra vacation from work and a bonus of local currency from Okcheon-gun.’

At the ‘Rural Tourism Idea Contest’ held at Exhibition Hall 1 of the ‘2024 A-Farm Show’ on the 30th, young participants in their 20s and 30s poured out unique ideas, drawing attention. Among them, the ‘Okcheon Well Issue’ by the Sejong University team, which was selected as the grand prize, is a proposal to provide one day of paid vacation and 10% of the amount spent in the Okcheon area in local currency if employees of small and medium-sized businesses in the Chungcheongbuk-do region enjoy various wellness (healthy and happy life) programs in Okcheon-gun and submit certification documents to their companies. Kim Il-soo (23) of the Sejong University team said, “Okcheon-gun is a structure where everyone can create a virtuous cycle by attracting tourists, companies increasing labor productivity, and workers getting proper rest,” and added, “I hope to contribute even a little to revitalizing local tourism.”

The grand prizes (2 teams) were awarded to △Seoul National University’s ‘Three Meals in an Empty House in the Village’ and △Konkuk University’s ‘Rural Pet Training Camping Using a Closed School.’ The Seoul National University team presented a program where they remodeled an empty house in a rural area into a shared garden, and then had tourists visiting the site become self-sufficient using rural resources. The Konkuk University team presented an idea for a tourism activity with pets by reviving a closed school into a pet training campsite.

This competition was jointly planned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Rural Development Administration with the aim of creating a ‘rural area where people want to visit and stay’ by discovering creative ideas from the 2030 generation. This year, a total of 59 teams from 31 schools participated. One grand prize team, two first prize teams, and six excellence prize teams were selected as winners.

An event was also held to solve the problem of disappearing rural areas. The Agricultural Policy Research Center held a symposium on the theme of “Local Revitalization Project: Rural Areas, Youth, and Agriculture” at Exhibition Hall 2 and discussed what kind of efforts are needed for sustainable agriculture and rural areas.

In a keynote speech titled “The Role of Agriculture in the Era of Locals,” Jang Min-ki, director of the Agricultural Policy Research Center, emphasized, “We must create local stories through special products and traditional culture, and pursue innovation and competitiveness through networking that connects production and consumption using new technologies such as digital technology.”
