The 32nd edition of the Olympic Games will be held in Paris, the imposing city that will host this multi-sport event for the third time in its history. A total of 11,711 athletes will try to climb onto the Olympic podium in an intense 17 days of competition in the French capital.
Below, we will review 10 interesting facts about the Paris Olympic Games that will take place from July 26 to August 11:
1) Mascot, logo, poster and pictograms
Phryge will be the mascot of Paris 2024 and its design was inspired by the shape of the traditional Phrygian cap, a hood with a curved tip that is a representative symbol of France.
The logo used for the Paris Olympic Games combines the symbol of a gold medal plus the Olympic flame and the figure of Marianne, the personification of the French Republic.
For this edition of the Games, 62 pictograms were designed to symbolize different sports, as well as pride, values and a large and diverse family.
Artist Ugo Gattoni was commissioned to create the official posters for Paris 2024, whose designs include historic monuments of the French capital such as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, as well as the imposing River Seine.
2) Headquarters
In total, 35 venues will host the various events of the 2024 Olympic Games. Six of these venues are in stadiums that will host football matches; four will be in other cities in France; four will be located in Versailles and eight will be in the metropolitan area of Paris. The surfing discipline will take place in the French territory of Tahiti, which is 15,000 kilometres from the French capital.
3) Medals
Each medal for the 2024 Games is adorned with an original piece of the Eiffel Tower. The prestigious company LVMH was in charge of creating the designs for these medals that will be awarded in the different Olympic events.
4) Ticket sales and costs
The final stage of ticket sales for the 2024 Olympic Games began today. Since a year ago, nearly 2.8 million tickets have gone on sale for the various Olympic events and disciplines.
Tickets for the various Olympic events cost between $25 and $235 on average. Tickets for Paris 2024 events can be purchased on the official Games website (www.paris2024.org/en/tickets).
5) Opening ceremony
For the first time in history, the Olympic Opening Ceremony will not take place in a stadium. The various delegations will parade on boats along the River Seine, in an event that will take place on July 26.
Approximately 300,000 people are expected to attend this Opening Ceremony, which promises to be unforgettable.
6) Sports disciplines
The Paris Olympics will see 329 events across 32 sports disciplines. For the first time, there will be gender parity with 50% men and 50% women. The number of mixed disciplines has increased from 18 to 22, and sports such as athletics, boxing and cycling will have full gender equality for the first time.
Breaking is the newest sport to be included in the Paris Olympic programme, while karate and baseball/softball have been excluded from the Paris 2024 programme.
7) Russian and Belarusian athletes
Following the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee decided to allow athletes from both nations to participate, but under a neutral flag. These athletes will not be allowed to openly support the invasion or display the flag of either country.
8) Olympic flame
The Olympic flame was lit yesterday from the ruins of ancient Olympia (Greece). After several days of touring Greece, the torch with the Olympic flame will arrive in France on May 8.
The Olympic flame will travel across France for 68 days until it reaches the French capital for the opening ceremony.
9) Olympic Village
The Olympic Village, which will host the various delegations, was inaugurated last February. The entire infrastructure and its surroundings cover approximately 52 hectares and are located near the Saint-Denis stadium.
The Olympic Village consists of restaurants, leisure areas, 7.5 hectares of green spaces, promenades along the banks of the Seine and apartments where athletes and members of the various delegations will stay.
10) Ecuador qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games
So far, our country has 26 athletes qualified for the Paris Olympic Games. Athletics, Wrestling, Modern Pentathlon, Olympic Shooting, Boxing, Equestrian, Open Water Swimming, Cycling and Weightlifting are the disciplines that have secured Olympic quotas so far.
More qualifiers could arrive in Triathlon, Judo, Swimming, Athletics, Boxing, Table Tennis, Wrestling. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to surpass the number of qualifiers that there were in Tokyo 2021, when a total of 48 athletes obtained their Olympic ticket.
