100,000 Rail Passes sold: a mixed success for a subscription which allows unlimited travel

Ever since he got his famous sesame, Nikola has been traveling every weekend. The 19-year-old from Toulouse went to Bordeaux (Gironde), Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), Paris and recently Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin). “I’m trying to explore all the big cities in France,” says this student studying to become a network administrator. All you have to do is pay the price of 49 euros per month, the price of the new special “Rail Pass” which you get on July 1st. Trial for young people under 27 in July and August, this subscription allows unlimited travel with TER and Intercités trains, anywhere in France.

Three weeks after it went into operation, 100,000 Rail Passes were sold and 450,000 tickets were reserved – for free. Still far from the 700,000 young people aged 16 to 27 who are eligible according to the Ministry of Transport, which has struggled for several weeks with the regions – TER planning authorities – to succeed in implementing this presidential promise in the last minute.
