Woo-Ram Jeong (39) of the Hanwha Eagles, who holds the record for the most appearances by an Asian pitcher, is retiring from active duty.

The Hanwha Eagles announced on the 15th, “Jung Woo-ram, who has been a professional for 21 years, is coming to an end. We will hold his retirement ceremony during one of the remaining home games this season.”

Woo-Ram Jung, who began his professional career as the 11th overall pick in the 2nd round of the 2004 rookie draft by the SK Wyverns (now SSG Landers), pitched in 1,004 games, the most by a KBO League pitcher and the most by an Asian pitcher in a single league.

Jung Woo-ram played a key role in building the SK dynasty as a bullpen pitcher from the late 2000s to the early 2010s.

Woo-Ram Jeong, who obtained free agent (FA) qualifications ahead of the 2016 season, changed uniforms to Hanwha.

Jung Woo-ram played in the first team for a total of 18 seasons until last year, excluding the 2013-14 season when he was serving in the military. He showed off his ‘iron man’ side by appearing in more than 50 games in 15 of the 18 seasons. He also recorded a total of 64 wins, 47 losses, 197 saves, 145 holds, and an average ERA of 3.18 in the first team.

On October 2nd last year, in the game against the NC Dinos in Daejeon, Jeong Woo-ram set a record by becoming the first KBO League pitcher to appear in 1,000 games.

Then, on October 15, 2023, he appeared in his 1,003rd game against the Lotte Giants in Daejeon, setting a new record for the most games played by an Asian pitcher in a single league.

After accepting the club’s offer to become a playing coach at the end of last season, Woo-Ram Jeong focused on guiding younger players as a pitching coach for the remaining teams without making any first-team appearances this season, and recently decided to retire.

Jung Woo-ram said, “I was able to stand on the mound for a long time thanks to the help and love of many people, including the Hanwha Eagles. I sincerely thank everyone who supported and helped me.”

Hanwha plans to disclose information related to the retirement ceremony through its official social network service (SNS) account.
