Bill Hale, a 74-year-old local, fell in love with yoga after discovering the practice in June. Since then, he has diligently attended a remarkable 102 classes at the House of Yoga in Mount Maunganui. Hale was immediately drawn to the studio’s tranquil atmosphere, where gentle music sets the tone for slower-paced routines, perfectly suited to his age.
He aims to attend class daily and has even participated in four classes in a single day! Hale emphasizes the meditative aspect of yoga, particularly enjoying the “Yin” classes where poses are held for three or four minutes. This provides a unique challenge for Hale and his fellow classmates, who sway and remind each other to persevere. He finds strength in this shared experience, stating ”it’s brilliant…you’re with other people.” It’s clear Hale treasures the community formed through disciplined practice.
Beyond strengthening his body, Hale notes significant physical benefits from his commitment. After losing 12kg in two years, Hale credits yoga as a major contributor, along with gym workouts, to his newfound weight loss.
Hale’s strength and improved muscle definition are noticeable, further propelling his motivation. He encourages people his age to embrace yoga, assuring them “Don’t be embarrassed,”
victorious over his initial reservations due to his age and often being the only man present. Hale advises that ever-present discomfort is temporary, giving way to familiarity and enjoyment as the yogic journey continues.
Tineke Duyvestyn, a senior teacher at House of Yoga, observes Hale’s remarkable commitment and joyful approach to learning. His willingness to explore and participate solidifies his place as a valued student.
Duyvestyn praises Hale’s dedication to self-improvement. She believes Hale’s positive attitude continues to motivate those around him.
Duyvestyn emphasizes that welcoming new yogis with open arms lies at the heart of their practice. Yoga provides a space for individuals to begin, regardless of background or ability. She celebrates the transformation Hale has undergone, showcasing the power of yoga to nurture both the mind and body.

Time.news Editor: Welcome, Bill! It’s truly inspiring to hear about your journey into yoga at 74. Can you share what initially drew you to this practice?
Bill Hale: Thank you for having me! Honestly, I stumbled upon yoga by chance back in June. I was looking for a way to stay active and manage stress, and when I first entered the House of Yoga, I was immediately captivated by the serene atmosphere. The gentle music and calming presence of the studio drew me in.
Editor: It sounds like the studio really resonated with you. How did you find your first yoga class?
Bill: It was quite the experience! I remember feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. But once I started, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The slower-paced routines were perfect for my age, and I loved that I could move at my own pace while focusing on my breath.
Editor: Attending 102 classes since June is quite an achievement! What keeps you motivated to practice daily?
Bill: The community at the studio plays a huge role in it. Everyone is so supportive, and I’ve made friends who encourage me to do my best. Plus, I genuinely look forward to the meditative aspects of yoga. I find deep relaxation in holding poses for a few minutes, especially during the Yin classes.
Editor: Yin yoga seems to be a favorite for you! Can you explain what you enjoy most about it?
Bill: Absolutely! In Yin yoga, you hold the poses for three to four minutes, which allows me to connect deeply with my body and mind. It’s a real challenge, but there’s something satisfying about pushing my boundaries and finding stillness in the process. It’s like a moving meditation for me.
Editor: You’ve even participated in four classes in a single day! That’s impressive. How do you feel after such an intense day of yoga?
Bill: (chuckles) Exhausted, but incredibly fulfilled! Each class rejuvenates me in a different way. The first class may tire me out, but by the time I get to the fourth, I feel a sense of accomplishment and clarity that is unbeatable.

Bill: It’s transformed not just my physical health but also my mental well-being. I feel more centered and focused in my daily life. Plus, I’m more aware of my body and its needs, which has improved my overall quality of life.
