In each simulation, the participants of the competition are assigned roles and positions, as they must put themselves in the role of different actors that are relevant in the application of IHL. To that end, students use their creativity to impersonate government officials, humanitarian workers, legal advisors, military actors, journalists, citizens, etc.
In this case, the event coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, at a time when their dissemination is becoming increasingly important. The competition was preceded by an educational conference in Quito from May 10 to 14, in which topics of current relevance were discussed, such as: IHL and autonomous weapons and artificial intelligence, the application of IHL in outer space and isolation between organized crime groups and organized military groups.
The winning team of the 10th edition of Manuel Muñoz Borrero at the University of San Francisco de Quito of Ecuador. As part of the award, they will receive financial support from the ICRC to participate in the International IHL Competition “Jean Pictet” 2025, if the team is involved and accepted by the Organizing Committee of the Competition.
