In the first nine months of 2024, bulk cargo was handled the most in Latvian ports – 12.447 million tons, which is 20% less than in the last nine months.
Among them, grain and grain products were handled in the amount of 4.974 million tons, which is 8.2% more than in the corresponding period of 2023, wood chips were handled in the amount of 1.821 million tons, which is 36.8% more, coal was handled in the amount of 795,400 tons, which is 3.9 times less, but chemical bulk cargo handled amounted to 374,900 tons, which is 12.5% less than in the last nine months.
In the nine months of 2024, general cargo was handled in Latvian ports in the amount of 10.237 million tons, which is 3.5% more than in the corresponding period of 2023.
Among them, timber was handled in the amount of 4.028 million tons, which is 27.4% more than last year in the corresponding period, 3.722 million tons of cargo in containers, which is 1.4% more, but “roll on/roll off” or ro-ro cargo – 2.328 million tons, which is 11.6% less.
On the other hand, bulk cargoes were handled in the amount of 3.347 million tons in nine months this year, which is 13.4% less than in the corresponding period a year earlier.
The majority of transshipped bulk cargoes were oil products – 2.857 million tons, which is a decrease of 19.2% compared to the nine months of 2023.
The Port of Riga was still in the leading position in terms of the amount of cargo handled in the nine months of this year, where 13.141 million tons were handled, which is 6.8% less than in the corresponding period of 2023.
The port of Ventspils follows, where cargo turnover in the nine months of this year was 5.628 million tons, which is 32.2% less, while the third place was the port of Liepāja with 5.247 million tons, which is 1.1% more than in the nine months of 2023.
Among the small Latvian ports, the largest cargo turnover in the nine months of 2024 was in the port of Skulte – 1.074 million tons, which is 23.5% more than in the corresponding period a year earlier. It is followed by the port of Mersrag with 517,200 tons, which is 25.4% more, and the port of Salacgrivas with 391,200 tons of cargo, which is 5.3% more than last year in the corresponding period.
In general, 2.015 million tons of cargo were handled in the small ports of Latvia in nine months this year, which is 17.1% more than in the corresponding period of 2023.
It has already been announced that a total of 38.655 million tons of cargo was handled in Latvian ports in 2023, which is 19.6% less than in 2022. Among them, 29.32 million tons of cargo were handled in Latvian ports in nine months last year.
