Uan 11-year-old girl was shot dead and her father seriously injured on Saturday evening in the garden of their house in Plonevez-du-Faou (Finistère), after their Dutch neighbor opened fire, against the backdrop of a possible conflict neighborhood, the prosecution announced on Sunday.
Saturday, around 10 p.m. in the hamlet of Saint-Herbot located in the Arrée mountains, “the soldiers of the gendarmerie company of Chateaulin intervened (…) following firearm fire”, indicated the prosecutor of the Republic of Quimper Carine Halley in a press release.
On the spot, the gendarmes discovered the lifeless body of an 11-year-old girl. The girl and her family are British according to a source at the gendarmerie.
The father of the child was also discovered seriously injured, with a vital prognosis, according to the magistrate. The days of the mother, also injured, were not in danger.
The couple’s second daughter, aged eight, was found safe and sound “but in shock,” said the prosecutor.
According to the first elements of the investigation, “the neighbor of the victims, a 71-year-old Dutch pensioner, suddenly appeared, armed with a firearm” and shot at the family who was in the garden.
According to the prosecution, if the reasons for this tragedy are not yet known, “it would appear that a conflict has been opposing the two neighbors for several years over a plot of land adjoining the two properties”.
According to a source at the gendarmes, the neighbor used his weapon, a rifle, and shot through a hedge.
He then retreated to his home, with his wife, according to the prosecutor.
“After the intervention of the negotiator of the gendarmerie and the GIGN, the defendant and his wife ended up surrendering. They were arrested around 11 p.m. and placed in police custody,” said Ms. Halley.

In the newspaper Le Télégramme, a retiree from the army, a direct neighbor of the family targeted by the shots and whose name has not been specified, recounts the scene: “I was at home at the beginning of the evening, I saw that the whole little family was installed under the oak tree, at the bottom of their garden which I can see from my house. The two little girls were playing near the games and on the swing, the parents were sitting on their usual bench and making a barbecue”.
The alleged shooter “arrived three years ago and he does not speak to anyone. He had already made a fuss at the town hall, complaining about the noise”, he added.
According to another testimony from neighbors, quoted in Ouest-France, “everyone knew this family (the victims, editor’s note). in the town”.
“The mother works at ADMR (home help in rural areas) and the father works at home,” Serge and Sylvie told the Breton daily.
On Sunday, an AFP correspondent noted the presence of gendarmes on the scene and a dog team in this hamlet of around ten year-round residents, where there is a famous parish church.
A flagrant investigation was opened by the Quimper prosecutor’s office on the counts of intentional homicide of a 15-year-old minor and attempted intentional homicides.
The investigation is entrusted to the soldiers of the Research Brigade (BR) of Chateaulin.
