Mark Thompson will remain chief executive and editor-in-chief of CNN as the network’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, merges into a newly combined media entity led by David Ellison’s Paramount Skydance. The $110 billion transaction is expected to close on Tuesday following a federal settlement.
The transition resolves months of intense speculation inside the media industry regarding the future leadership of the 24-hour cable news channel. Mark Thompson, who has led CNN since 2023 after helming both the BBC and The New York Times, announced his retention in a memo to network staffers on Monday morning. While the merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery places CNN under the same corporate umbrella as CBS News, Thompson urged employees not to assume the two newsrooms would consolidate.
David Ellison and Paramount Skydance Finalize the $110 Billion Transaction
The corporate consolidation moves forward following a federal judge’s approval of a settlement between Paramount and a coalition of 12 state attorneys general who had sued to block the deal on antitrust grounds. Valued in the neighborhood of $110 billion, the transaction combines movie studios, streaming services, and major television assets, including HBO and a vast collection of cable networks.
In a video posted to X on Friday, Paramount CEO David Ellison showcased the company’s core brands, explicitly placing CNN alongside major studio assets in the final frames. The signal was interpreted across the industry as a deliberate choice to treat the news network as a central strategic pillar rather than an asset to trim, spin, or sell.
Bari Weiss Remains at CBS News While Separate Leadership Prevails
Fears among CNN staff that CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss would be installed atop the cable network were put to rest when leadership rosters were announced. Weiss will remain in her role at CBS News. Although Ellison had initially envisioned giving Weiss broader oversight, sources noted that he cooled on the idea following months of turbulence surrounding her overhaul of 60 Minutes
and other programs.
Despite keeping the two news divisions under separate operational leaders, the corporate structure will establish an editorial independence board for CNN within six months of the takeover. The board will report through the chief compliance officer to monitor adherence to independent standards.
Digital Strategy and the Road Ahead for CNN Worldwide
Thompson enters the new corporate era focused heavily on digital expansion, a strategy that previously included launching the CNN All Access streaming product in October 2025. Thompson told staffers in his memo that incoming leadership had reviewed the network’s digital roadmap and expressed strong enthusiasm for it.
“I have real confidence that they both understand and will fully support the principle and practice of the kind of independent news that CNN has always stood for.”

While the broader executive leadership team — featuring Ynon Kreiz as co-CEO — takes shape ahead of Tuesday’s closing, exact operational details regarding back-office coordination and technical integration between CNN and CBS News have yet to be finalized.
