11,000 soldiers and national guardsmen will gather in military exercises in Latvia /

“Namejs 2024” will be attended by soldiers and national guardsmen from all NBS units, including soldiers of the national defense service, reserve soldiers and soldiers of the allied armed forces.

In order to improve and strengthen the ability to carry out tasks in the event of a national threat, the exercise “Namejs 2024” plans cooperation with the Operational Management Center of Civil Defense, including the State Chancellery and branch ministries, their subordinate institutions, state security institutions, several municipalities and merchants, providing the necessary for the needs of national defense support, thereby strengthening the comprehensive national defense system in Latvia.

The training is organized in cooperation with the NATO multinational division “North” headquarters. Allied soldiers from the USA, Estonia and Lithuania, the NATO Multinational Battle Group as part of the Land Forces Mechanized Infantry Brigade, the NATO Multinational Brigade Headquarters in Latvia, the NATO Force Integration Unit in Latvia, and the Canadian Armed Forces Command in Latvia will be involved. The exercise will be supported by the Joint Response Force, as well as representatives of various levels of NATO headquarters.

As part of the “Namejs 2024” exercise, NBS plans to conduct three-day mobilization exercises for a limited number of personnel in September, during which the operation of the mobilization mechanisms will be tested for their further improvement. The training will take place in the area of ​​responsibility of the 3rd Latgale Brigade of the National Guard.

During the comprehensive national defense exercise “Namejs 2024”, NBS in cooperation with the State Border Guard will continue to take measures to strengthen the state border. It is planned to start deploying the purchased anti-mobility materials in nature, with priority for blocking roads, as well as strengthening the infrastructure of border control points and border guard departments of the State Border Guard with fortifications.

Responding to changing security challenges, Latvia’s national defense system must be comprehensive and must be based on the readiness of all society and state institutions to overcome the crisis, as well as resilience against external influences.

A comprehensive national defense system includes not only national defense areas or state administrative institutions, but also representatives of the private sector, companies, non-governmental organizations, citizens and other persons.

The goal of a comprehensive national defense system is to facilitate the creation of a system of planning, coordination and partnership between state institutions, as well as the private sector, non-governmental organizations and citizens. The practical task of a comprehensive national defense system is to determine specific tasks and roles in national defense for each state institution.

The training “Namejs” has been planned in advance and has been taking place throughout Latvia since 2014. The regular conduct of military exercises plays an essential role in maintaining and strengthening the combat capabilities of the National Armed Forces, which must be constantly at a high level.

The armed forces must always be ready to react in time and effectively to potential threats and guarantee Latvia’s security. On the other hand, strengthening cooperation with state and local government institutions, businessmen of various industries and their involvement in training strengthens the system of comprehensive national defense in Latvia.

NBS informed that exercises will take place intensively throughout Latvia during the autumn period, during which soldiers and military equipment of Latvia and allied countries will move along the main and regional roads of Latvia. During the execution of the training tasks, military aircraft will fly in the Latvian airspace, including at low altitude, as well as combat shooting at ranges.
