This Thursday the NGO Prisoners Defenders (PD) reported that a total of 1,117 were registered prisoners for reasons politicians in Cubain June alone, four more than those included in its previous monthly report.

According to the Madrid-based organization, in May it added five people considered political prisoners to its list and one was removed from the registry after fully serving the sentence imposed by the Cuban regime.

The information was published on the NGO’s website, where it explained that 30 minors remain on the list of prisoners in Cuba, of which 27 are serving sentences and three are being prosecuted.

Prisoners Defenders said that 14 of the minors have already been convicted of sedition, with an average sentence of five years’ imprisonment, most of them under house arrest or forced labour without confinement.

The statement added that 225 people, mostly participants in the anti-government protests of July 11, 2021, have been charged with sedition, and at least 223 have already been sentenced for that crime, to an average of ten years of imprisonment.

In light of this, the NGO reported that they have counted 1,728 people deprived of liberty who were arrested for political reasons in Cuba, “three years after the historic peaceful demonstrations of 11J,” the largest in decades on the island.

The statement clarifies that this global figure does not include “short- or medium-term temporary detentions, but only criminal prosecutions through precautionary measures or sentences.”

According to PD, at the end of June the number of prisoners (including minors and two trans women) who “are still under political and conscientious objections and convictions” remained at 118.

“All trans women in prison of conscience have been and are imprisoned among men, which also happens with common trans prisoners, suffering situations, among men, indescribable for their sexual condition,” PD reported.

The NGO added that it identified “304 prisoners with serious medical pathologies without adequate medical treatment,” while stating that “all of them are suffering from various medical pathologies due to lack of food, mistreatment, the repressive environment and the lack of adequate medical care for all of them.”
