“María Branyas has left us. She died as she wanted: in her sleep, peacefully and without pain. A few days ago she told us: ‘One day I will leave here.’ I will never taste coffee again, eat yogurt, or pamper the Fairy…; I will also leave behind my memories, my thoughts… and I will cease to exist in that body.”

However, despite the sad news, this Wednesday Guinness World Records declared Tomiko Itooka, a 116-year-old Japanese woman from the city of Ashiya, western Japan, as the candidate to be the oldest living person in the world.

“Tomiko Itooka, 116 (born May 23, 1908), is now the world’s oldest living woman and the oldest living person, following the death of Maria Branyas Morera, 117.”

According to the agency that collects data and curious events that have occurred around the world, Tomiko’s age has been validated by the Gerontology Research Group, led by Robert D. Young, who confirmed that she is alive.
