The 12 athletes, 12 causes campaign was created by the Nereu Association, recognized for its pioneering work in the fight against childhood obesity, with the support of Plátano de Canarias and the Superior Council of Sport (CSD), through its Sports Foundation Young.
The Nereu Association, which promotes the promotion of healthy lifestyles, takes another step in this campaign to improve the lives of boys and girls through physical activity, healthy eating and emotional education.
To do this, 12 athletes will participate who, as protagonists for the younger audience, will give visibility to 12 causes, including the promotion of physical activity, the promotion of the Mediterranean diet, the strengthening of mental health and well-being, the importance of food sustainability, the integration of people with disabilities or the growing diffusion of women’s sports, among others.
Canary Islands footballer Pedri, player of the Spanish football team and FC Barcelona; Marcus Cooper, canoeist and Olympic medalist; Emmanuel Reyes Pla, boxer and bronze medalist in Paris 2024; Ray Zapata, gymnast and Olympic medalist at Tokyo 2020; Sandra Sánchez, Olympic karate champion in Tokyo 2020; Fernando Romay, former basketball player and silver medalist at the ’84 Los Angeles Olympics; Paralympic athlete Adi Iglesias, Olympic gold and bronze at Tokyo 2020; Lucía Martín-Portugués, bronze medal fencer at the 2024 European Championships; María Corbera, canoeist and winner of 11 European and world medals in the last Olympic cycle; Laura Fuertes, boxer and European and world bronze medalist; Álvaro Valera, winner of six medals in table tennis adapted in as many Paralympics; and Sara Hurtado, an Olympic figure skater, make up the dozen athletes.
Their commitment made the launch of this campaign possible, which is part of the ADB 2030 Plan to support grassroots sport, promoted by the Superior Council of Sport and the Youth Sport Foundation.
The challenge of the ’12 athletes, 12 causes’ campaign is to transform this action into a movement that has a real impact on society and its habits to improve the quality of life.
An action that supports sport as one of the most relevant areas of society, connecting and empathizing with families and acting as an example and inspiration for the new generations through 12 sport icons, who transmit a message to society from 12 causes for transcend visibility and education.
The initiative starts this Thursday, November 21, and will last until May 2025 on the web and social networks.
The Nereu Association was founded in 2006 and, since then, has been developing various actions and projects that combat sedentary lifestyle and bad eating habits.
For years, Plátano de Canarias has represented the commitment to promoting healthy lifestyle habits, among which a balanced diet and the practice of sport stand out, underlines the event’s press release.
