This is the information gathered at the meeting of the Civil Defense Commission held this morning.

He pointed out that the rain and wind will continue and there will definitely be more such applications.

Strode admitted that so far the largest amount of precipitation in the city was recorded in the fall of 2014, when during the day it fell below 80% of the monthly norm. On the other hand, it has now rained close to the two-month norm during the day.

Jelgava’s pumping stations cannot discharge such a quantity of water, although they are working at full capacity around the clock. In the first half of the day, when the rain had subsided a bit, the situation changed a little, but then the rain started again.

Therefore, the situation is said to be very difficult. Currently, there are no opportunities to help people who ask for help to pump water from private houses and basements. The rainwater system is said to be full of water, so the water has nowhere to stay and pumping out the water will do nothing, because the water will flow in again.

He called on people to record the situation and write applications for assistance to the municipality. In turn, the municipality will gather all the information and turn to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, which has already promised support.

As reported, during the storm last night in Jelgava, help was provided to seven people to evacuate them from the flooded house, the municipality informs.

People are accommodated in the service hotel on Jānis Čakste boulevard.

Streets and intersections were flooded in the city last night, floods caused washouts and damaged the city’s infrastructure, yards were flooded and water began to flow into some buildings, trees and tree branches were broken by the wind.

Anticipating the heavy workload of the rescue service, the municipal authority “Pilsētsaimniecība” already at night involved the company with which it has a contract for sawing trees broken by the wind, in order to clear the roadways. At the moment, at least one lane of the roadway is primarily released so that the streets are passable.

All the rainwater pumping stations in the city are working, but as the rain continues, they are still unable to drain the large amount of water.

Only in the morning, the amount of water in the city streets gradually began to decrease – from a maximum of 180 millimeters to 150 millimeters per square meter.

The situation is particularly difficult in several districts of private houses, where the rain has flooded the yards. Residents report the need to pump out water. However, currently, in places where not only yards, but also district ditches have overflowed, there is nowhere to pump out the rainwater.

Residents’ reports are currently being collected and as soon as the water level in the district ditches drops, it will be possible to start pumping water.
