AGI – More than 135 thousand spectators, world record numbers for a sporting event in the era of Covid, attended the Indianapolis 500 in the United States. The 105th edition of the race, valid for the Indycar championship, was won for the fourth time in 19 years from the Brazilian driver Helio Castroneves who joins AJ Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears among the aces who have won what is defined as “the greatest spectacle of racing”.
The victory of “Spiderman”
The 46-year-old “Spiderman” Castroneves had won his third Indianapolis in 2009. The 135,000 spectators in the Indiana basin constitute the largest audience in the world for a sporting event in the last 18 months marked by the pandemic. This is 40% of the capacity of the facility, as agreed by the organizers with the health authorities. Last year the competition was moved from May to August and was held without an audience.
