There is no shortage of banknotes of all denominations, the BNB has confirmed

The total value of banknotes in circulation is already BGN 28.7 billion, and in one month – in June 2024, it grows by BGN 200 million, and in a year – by BGN 2.2 billion. The highest in this amount is the share of stolevki – 13.7 billion BGN, immediately after them are the 50 BGN banknotes with a total value of 12.1 billion, according to the data from the monetary statistics of the BNB.

In June, businesses and the population paid with a total of 586,988,843 banknotes, the BNB reported. Their number was the highest in December last year, when there were as many as 605,900,241 pieces in circulation. The difference is explained by the fact that for the Christmas and New Year holidays expenses increase and thus the amount of money in circulation rises.

Most of these notes are with the big ones denominations

– there were 242,834,500 pieces of 50 BGN in circulation, and immediately after them were the coins – 137,028,282 pieces. There were 97,513,901 banknotes with a denomination of BGN 20, the data also show.

In 1999, when the first statistical data on money in circulation were available, we used 160,559,571 banknotes. The one with the largest denomination then was the 50-leva with 20,074,488 pieces in circulation.

But at the end of 1999, the most were banknotes with a denomination of 1 lev – 37,223,418 pieces, which were removed later. Banknotes with a nominal value of BGN 2 are also no longer a means of payment from January 1, 2021.

Paper money that is not in circulation can be exchanged at BNB cash desks without charge and without a deadline. Bulgarian banknotes and coins, issued before 1990, have expired and are no longer accepted at the cash desks of the central bank. On their website, the central bankers have announced which issues of old banknotes are exchanged by nominal value in the ratio of 1000 old leva for 1 new one.

On December 8, 2003, the 100 BGN banknote entered circulation in Bulgaria.

In recent days, publications have appeared precisely about it, according to which there is a shortage of these banknotes. Banknotes of 100 BGN are not enough, and this prevents the achievement of monetary circulation, which would contribute to the optimal development of the economy, reported several sites. They refer to unnamed sources, according to which the BNB is late in organizing an auction for the selection of a printing house and has not concluded a contract for the supply of banknote paper. This is how the printing of 21 million new 100 leva notes was delayed.

“In connection with the spread of information in the media about the shortage of 100 BGN banknotes, the Bulgarian National Bank has ensured the available monetary circulation with banknotes of all denominations”, the BNB answered a question of “24 Chasa” about the lack of enough 100 banknotes leva.

Those familiar with the technology for planning the printing of banknotes and coins explain that the “Emission” management manages the money in circulation depending on the rates of economic growth, inflation, the usual amount of payments. The number of paper money also depends on the loading and software of ATMs and POS terminals, as well as on the volume of banknotes withdrawn from circulation, mainly due to damage and wear. However, the plans for quantities, ratios, withdrawal of old issues and issuance of new ones are approved by the Governing Board of the BNB, and

the specific planning as usual makes for three years ahead

For this year, the expenses related to the maintenance of monetary circulation are BGN 186,841 million. Their increase is 49.4% compared to 2023. When determining the amount of banknotes and coins required for 2024, their demand and the replacement of worn ones are taken into account.

BGN 9.491 million have been set aside for new banknotes alone. Of these, BGN 3.986 million are for the production of 21 million new banknotes with a denomination of BGN 100. In determining the costs for 2024, the agreed prices for the supply of banknote paper and printing were used.

No one makes fake 5 BGN

The number of counterfeit banknotes registered in the second quarter of the year was 397, or 172 more than those found in the first quarter, when they were 225, according to BNB data.

In the second quarter, there were the most counterfeits with a denomination of 100 BGN – 230 pieces. The BNB reports an increase compared to the first quarter, when they were 50. The second most counterfeited was the one with a nominal value of BGN 20. There were 83 such banknotes identified.

74 are the fake 50 BGN notes, 10 10 BGN banknotes and none with a denomination of BGN 5. The number of banknotes in circulation in the country at the end of June was 590,533,684, according to the statistics of the Bulgarian National Bank.
