And landslide occurred on Sunday in southwestern Sichuan province of the Chine left 14 dead and five missing, the local government said. The landslide “occurred on top of a mountain” at the site of a forest farm near the city of Leshan and “search and rescue operations are underway,” the local government statement said.
“At 3:30 p.m., the bodies of 14 victims were found and five people are missing,” the same source said. More than 180 people were sent to the scene to try to find any survivors, the statement said. The site of the accident is located in an area mountainous about 240 km south of Chengdu, the provincial capital. About 40,000 people live in this rural region which depends on forestry and agricultural activities as well as a few industries including electric power.
Landslides are a frequent hazard in mountainous and rural parts of China, especially during the rainy season months. Landslides have already occurred in Sichuanespecially in 2017 when a landslide completely engulfed a village and its sixty houses.
