Medical and security sources said that at least 14 people were killed and 25 others were injured when a public transport bus collided with a heavy transport truck on a desert road in southwestern Egypt.

The sources said that the accident occurred on Wednesday on the Assiut-Kharga highway, about 400 km southwest of Cairo, in the New Valley Governorate, which shares a long border with Libya.

The official Middle East News Agency quoted the governor of the New Valley, Muhammad al-Zamlot, as saying that 17 ambulances were dispatched to the scene to transport the injured to hospitals.

It was not immediately clear how the accident occurred.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics said in a report last year that road accidents in Egypt left 7,101 dead in 2021, an increase of 15.2 percent compared to 2020.
