Of the 193 member states of the UN, 143 countries, including Mexico, voted in favor of requesting the integration of Palestine as a State to the United Nations.

Only nine countries voted against (including the United States, Israel, Argentina, Hungary and the Czech Republic), and 25 abstained, in this resolution, which was co-sponsored by Spain, Ireland, Norway and Belgium, along with more than seventy countries. The coordination of the European Union was once again called into question.

The resolution approved by the Assembly also grants Palestine new powers that go beyond its current status as a “non-member observer state” and that define its participation in the General Assembly, but specifies that it will not have the right to vote nor will it be able to run as a candidate for the bodies. of the United Nations.

In the text approved today, the Assembly declares that the State of Palestine “is qualified for membership in the UN in accordance with article 4 of the founding charter, and therefore must be admitted as a member of the United Nations”; consequently, “recommends that the Security Council reconsider the matter favorably.”

The Council already rejected the full membership of Palestine on April 18 with the only blocking vote being the United States, while twelve members of the Council supported it and two abstained; That is to say, an indeterminate period now opens in which the Council could return to the matter, without the slightest clarity about the calendar.

The majority achieved today by the resolution favorable to Palestine is much higher than the two-thirds required, but it is barely greater than the one that achieved Palestine’s entry as an Observer State in 2012, which then had 138 votes in favor and also 9 against.

This difference is explained by the tensions caused in recent days by the claim of Palestine and the Arab countries that the resolution being voted on today included the right to vote for Palestine, which was poorly received even among European countries favorable to Palestine. , according to European diplomatic sources told EFE.

The United States, which has exerted constant pressure in recent days, denounced that this first draft meant “mocking the Security Council” and the founding charter of the UN with its rules, which also created a dangerous precedent, hence the final version of the resolution has been appropriately lowered.

What did Israel say?

The Israeli Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, described this Friday as an “absurd decision” the vote in the UN General Assembly in favor of the full integration of Palestine in the United Nations, which he considered “a reward for the Hamas terrorists.”

“The decision to improve the status of Palestinians at the UN is a reward for the Hamas terrorists after committing the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust and perpetrating the most atrocious sexual crimes the world has ever seen,” the minister said.

Katz considered that the measure “demonstrates the structural bias of the UN” and that, under the leadership of Secretary General Antonio Guterres, “it has become an irrelevant institution.”
