The girl, Eliyanna Andam, was killed by a 17-year-old with a knife the size of a sword, the witnesses said: the young woman had tried to intervene in an argument between the boy and his ex-girlfriend, but was stabbed to death.
Since the beginning of the year, 16 teenagers have already been killed in the streets of London, 13 of them stabbed: the newspapers are now talking about an epidemic of stabbings and a national emergency. Last year, 14 teenagers were killed in the capital, but the worst record was reached in 2021, with 30 teenagers murdered. Here we are not talking about Swiss Army Knives, but about real machetes with which young people go around today: they were also seen appearing, in August, at the Notting Hill Carnival, the annual Caribbean festival which this year recorded a record of violent incidents and arrests.

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has long been accused of deteriorating safety in the streets of the capital: and yesterday morning’s tragedy has rekindled the controversy. Because now it is no longer a question, as often happened in the past, of settling accounts between criminal gangs, of crimes confined to degraded suburbs: Eliyanna was killed while going to her school, an elite high school that costs 23 thousand euros a year. year. She dreamed of becoming a lawyer, she could have been the daughter of any family and her tragic end made the worst nightmare for any parent materialize: because here today no one can say they are safe anymore.
