On Thursday, August 22, the special voting contest ended, in which the participants were invited to assign the most popular Latvian, Estonian and Lithuanian city names to the “Airbus A220-300” airplanes.
The competition was organized to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Baltic Road. Voting took place from August 5 to August 22, and in total more than one million votes were received.
At the end of the competition, 48 cities were selected – 16 from each Baltic state – after which “airBaltic” “Airbus A220-300” airplanes will be named.
“airBaltic” adds that it will also rename those planes that have been assigned the names of Latvian cities since 2018.
Anyone could participate in the contest and voting could be done once a day. Participants could vote for any city located on the territory of Latvia, Estonia or Lithuania and which has the status of an official city, regardless of their nationality, citizenship or place of residence.
The Baltic Way was a peaceful political demonstration that took place on August 23, 1989, when approximately two million people joined hands, forming a 600-kilometer human chain through the Baltic States. This action proved their unity in their efforts to regain independence from the Soviet Union.
It has already been reported that “airBaltic” transported a total of 4.536 million passengers last year, which is 35.7% more than in 2022, and made 44,100 flights, which is 18.3% more than the year before.
It was also reported that the audited turnover of “airBaltic” was 664.289 million euros last year, which is 33.2% more than in 2022, and the company made a profit of 33.852 million euros, as opposed to the losses a year earlier.
